TO THE SELF

do not douse
the blinking glow
you question now.

let yourself be.
give you some time.
did I say,
"let yourself be"?
no, that did not
come out right,
10 what I mean is
give you some space,
trail,
linger,
but do not digress.
go to the mirror
look at your eyes look back at you,
look deeper,
concentrate,
watch them transform;
20 those false black pearls
watch them transform into golden brown
wonderstars_ those eyes.
watch yourself reflect
in them,
be mesmerized,
be lost in the gaze,
but make sure
to find yourself
in time to see
you stare
30 back at you
it is beautiful,
yes?
the way you
so beautifully
radiate like the eastern sun
staring at your
beautiful self
all day long
through the world's eyes.
how you master
40 already, every
inch,
spot,
line,
every angle
there is
right, or left.
the circles form
a clan around
your eye's bags
50 they nag a lot;
those silly circles
they choose to let
open every
not-entirety-good
moments
they,
those circles
turn out pretty.
what perfectly
60 lovely imperfections
that make you.
and when another day,
they say, "you are no good",
or in other words, imply,
you are unworthy,
look them straight in the face
and say,
"I AM BEAUTIFUL,
I am way more than you
70 choose to believe".

The City That You Were

i was Jos
and
he was Lagos. i was the quiet streets of Rock Haven:
the houses separated by the heavy silence
of unanswered 'hellos' from neighbours.
the absolute conservation of shades the trees
cast here- was totally me. he. he was the busy streets of Obalende:
the unrepentant conductors yelling,
'Yaba! CMS! Yaba! Yaba!
the circular circulation of human sweat waving
through the air like Oxygen.
neglecting the weaknesses of island Ajebutters and JJC pedestrians. at night i was the city of J-Town after 8pm.
quiet. eerily so.
soldiers securing fences of the selected few.
smoking stuff and drinking liquor,
with AK-forty-somethings to bring down any rebel who dared to equal. he was the busy streets of Lasgidi at night:
the traffic, in French translated to, "la circulation"
right up from Admitalty Way through the Toll gates.
Cars honking, drivers cursing, almost excitedly at each other.
LASTMA officials obeying the call to rip-off 'rich' drivers. …
